The Faculty of Medicine

Studying at the Faculty of Medicine is firstly an opportunity to benefit from an exceptional campus in the heart of Europe’s capital city, where all health careers are catered for together, around the Erasme university teaching hospital. Here you can study medicine, veterinary science, biomedical science, and dentistry, and where all the teaching relies on a solid theoretical background for the acquisition of scientific knowledge together with highly developed applied teaching that is based on a system in both research laboratories, and practical internships at hospital level or with general practitioners. The teachers at the Faculty have been chosen as much for the scientific excellence as their teaching skills, to ensure both high level teaching and research.

In order to acquire knowledge, know-how and the necessary skills in the spirit of free inquiry that is inherent to the Université libre de Bruxelles, the Faculty has developed numerous tools including teaching in small groups (seminars, pratical work, work in teams, and direct hospital practice with patients the wards) thanks to the many laboratories and modern work rooms, and the huge network of teaching hospitals in Brussels itself, and the Brabant Wallon and Hainault regions. The high number of internships within the curriculum is a major feature of the Faculty. Future veterinary surgeons have access to placements and to visits in the various veterinary centres in the region.

The Faculty of Medicine is also an incredible crucible for research, which is recognized internationally, with over 350 researchers spread over the Erasme and Gosselies campuses. The biomedical track relies on these laboratories in turn, enabling students to participate in the development of knowledge and of medicine for the future. Many doctoral students benefit from the quality and diversity of research undertaken in the health area.

Social interaction is a permanent concern also at the Faculty of Medicine, with the campus offering in one green belt area, meeting/social places, sports facilities, a student union area, computer rooms, and a modern library. Studying at the Faculty of medicine also entails taking advantage of genuine international contacts, plus the added potential for students to undertake part of their degree programme studying or working as an intern abroad.
