What is the ECTS grading system?

The ECTS grading scale has been developed to allow the conversion of a grade from one European institution to another.

This scale does not replace the ULB grading system, it complements it as it allows to compare achievements of a student to the ones of his peers during previous years.

The ECTS grading scale is based on the statistical distribution of grades and the calculation of the threshold for each grade:

EXCELLENT: outstanding performance with only minor errors.

B

25%

VERY GOOD: above the average standard but with some errors.

C

30%

GOOD : generally sound work with a number of notable errors.

D

25%

SATISFACTORY: fair but with significant shortcomings.

E

10%

SUFFICIENT: performance meets the minimum criteria.

F

-

FAIL : considerable further work is requires.

 

  • the 10% of the most successful students receive a grade of A
  • the 25% following the grade B
  • the 30% following the grade C
  • the 25% following the grade D
  • the last 10% the grade E
