Course content

Case studies, mostly imaginary, tackling various examples of the analysis of archaeological data (spatial distributions, typology, seriation, dating etc.).

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

Initiate the students with scientific argumentation, the exploitation and interpretation of archaeological data.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The students are provided every two weeks with a new case study, written in English. This text presents specific archaeological data and problems that the students have to organize, comment and solve. The case studies are imaginary but realistic and destined to initiate them to the most usual forms of archaeological reasoning. The case studies prepared individually are discussed collectively in the classroom, with the active participation of the students. The week between two case studies is dedicated to an individual feedback on the student's preparation by the assistant, and to an assistance for the preparation of the next case study.
