The Welcome Desk for Refugees welcomes and accompanies all students individually in all their procedures, before, during and after registration at ULB.

The main concerns of young refugee students wishing to pursue university studies in Belgium relate mainly to administrative support (equivalences and admissions tests), assistance in learning French and, for some, English, assistance with registration, the functioning of the Belgian academic system, registration fees and finding accommodation. It therefore seemed essential to set up a first-line structure at ULB to support these refugee students.

The Welcome Desk For Refugees is at your disposal for:

  • Guide you in your registration process at the ULB as part of a regular course, or as a free student
  • Support you in your diploma equivalence application process
  • Register for French courses in order to obtain a sufficient level for the success of studies

Depending on the case, the student may benefit from :

  1. financial aid from the Student Social Service for the acquisition of course materials and transports costs
  2. free for :
  • registering for the university admission exam;
  • registration for the examination of sufficient command of the French language (two possibilities of taking the examination over one academic year);
  • registration as a free student according to the number of teaching units (courses) set by the host university, including the possibility of taking the French as a foreign language course.

Who can benefit ?

The persons targeted by these measures must meet the following conditions :
  • either be an asylum seeker in Belgium,
  • either be a beneficiary of subsidiary protection,
  • or have obtained refugee status in Belgium at the earliest since 1 January of the calendar year preceding the academic year of registration.
