Solidarity Funds for Researchers and Students in Danger
ULB has a strong tradition in its DNA of welcoming members of the academic community from countries in conflict or where fundamental rights are violated. Through initiatives such as the ULB Solidarity Fund and the Khaled al-Assad Solidarity Fund, the university has shown a firm commitment to ULB academic solidarity and support for researchers at risk. ULB has regularly taken a public stance in defence of academic freedom, underscoring that in many countries, the very right to learn and study is under threat. To counter these challenges, the university has created specific programmes, including the Bulles d’air programme, ULB humanitarian support for students, and ULB displaced researchers support, all designed to protect and promote access to education and research. These actions highlight ULB’s enduring mission to defend academic freedom and the right to study, values that remain at the core of the institution.
Khaled al-Assad Solidarity Fund
The Université libre de Bruxelles has set up the ULB solidarity fund to implement support for researchers at risk who can no longer carry out their work in their home countries, due to the content of their research or the free expression of their opinions.
Bulles d'air (Breathing space) Programme
ULB has decided to grant short-term funding (maximum 3 months) to academics who are no longer able to carry out their activities in their home country, due to a situation of internal or international conflict.
