    Presentation

    The programme provides insight into two major areas of the Oriental world: the Arab-Muslim and Chinese civilisations. It is based on the practice of one or several languages on the one hand (either Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Syriac, or ancient Hebrew; or Chinese), and on the study of the history and culture of the relevant area, on the other hand.

    Lecture classes, seminars, conference classes, computer-aided learning, language workshops, and personal assignments.

    ULB is the only university in French-speaking Belgium that offers a Master in Modern Languages and Letters: Oriental Languages. Several courses in the Master programme are given directly in the language studied, which means that students are expected to participate in class in the same language. In addition, the programme lets students learn about other major languages in the East and the Far East (Chinese, Persian, Turkish).

    Beyond just language courses, students are also given classes on literature, religion, and history both remote and recent.

    For the focus on Chinese studies, students are encouraged to spend one term in a partner foreign university in China or Taiwan once they have completed the first 60 credits of the Master programme.

    Students in the other focuses may apply to an exchange programme as soon as they have completed the first 60 credits of the Master programme.

    Access conditions

    Programme

    The programme includes a common core of courses (65 credits), specific courses for each focus (30 credits), and a dissertation (25 credits over two years).

    Three focuses are available for this Master:

    • the focus on advanced Arab-Muslim studies (only for graduates of the Bachelor in Modern Languages and Letters: Oriental Languages) provides in-depth knowledge of the Arab world and of the Turkish and Persian cultures.

    • the focus on Arab-Muslim studies has no language prerequisites and provides basic knowledge of the Arabic, Turkish, and Persian languages and literatures.

    • the focus on advanced Chinese studies provides in-depth knowledge of the Chinese language and culture. A Bachelor in Chinese Studies or in Chinese- French Translation (or equivalent) is required.

    Prospects

    Graduates of the Master in Modern Languages and Letters: Oriental Languages will possess a double set of skills: linguistic and cultural. While they can pursue a career in research or teaching in higher education, knowledge of Arabic, Chinese, or other oriental languages and cultures such as Turkish and Persian, are also valuable assets for various careers both in Belgium and abroad: professional and literary translation, journalism, culture, diplomacy, EU institutions, non-profits, NGOs, private companies, etc.
