    Presentation

    This Master programme teaches students to subject their philosophical knowledge to a strict critical and creative reasoning process. It gives them in-depth knowledge of the history of philosophy, its main branches (epistemology, aesthetics, ethics, philosophy of law, political philosophy, philosophy of psychology, hermeneutics, logic, metaphysics, ontology, etc.), its main topics, and their evolution. Students learn the skills required to engage critically with a text, problematise a philosophical question, use a specific methodology and argumentation, make proper use of knowledge as part of a reflection process, and present ideas appropriately. The Master with a teaching focus also provides knowledge (on didactics, the psychology of learning, using media, etc.) and practical skills (exercises, in-person classes, etc.) that are essential to teaching philosophy.

       

    ULB's philosophy programme is firmly rooted in the study of texts from which it draws its tradition, but its goal is also to broaden the scope of philosophy to more contemporary questions. Thanks to the Perelman chair, philosophers of international renown are regularly invited to speak. At the end of the programme, students can use their skills to engage in an in-depth conceptual analysis of various challenges in today's society.

    This Master programme places emphasis on a common core of theoretical courses and seminars, but it also lets students pick one of two specialisation tracks: a module on general philosophy, or a inter-university module on the philosophy of science.

    In addition, students may chose one of two focuses: a research focus, which teaches them the specific skills required to work in research, and a teaching focus, which prepares them to work as teachers while developing skills related to training, argumentation, and knowledge transfer, which are valued in many other sectors.

    In addition to traditional careers in teaching or research, this programme offers a strong background of intellectual skills that can be used in a variety of professions: analysing and summarising, thinking critically, creating, observing, describing, constructing. This is why philosophers often find work in professions that involve writing (publishing, media), ethical and bio-ethical issues, human resource management, or cultural innovation.
