Course teacher(s)

Claudio GIGANTE (Coordinator)

Language(s) of instruction

Italian

Course content

The topic of the course varies every year; this course is meant to provide students with a comprehensive command of the history of Italian literature after the Unification (1861)

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

In-depth study of a writer or a particular period of the Italian literature.

The exercises are designed to teach students to read and interpret the texts and the books that are included in the program. At the end of the course, the student should have reached level B2.1 or B2/3 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Ex-cathedra course and supervised exercices.

Classroom work is reinforced by reading assignments and exercises.

Contribution to the teaching profile

Through a critical reading of one or more classic texts of Italian literature, the course contributes to deepening knowledge linked not only to Italian language and literature, but also to European civilization of the modern era and in particular 19th-20th centuries. Thanks to the intertextual approach – adopted for reading narrative texts and different poetic forms – students can deepen analysis and interpretation techniques that are also useful for the study of modern literature in other languages. Students will be asked to consider the specific complexity of the literary phenomena examined (from a historical, social, ideological point of view) to prepare an original presentation.
