Course content
This course teaches the basic principles of qualitative research in a public health context. It provides an introduction to qualitative data collection and analysis.
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
- Understand the basic principles of qualitative research
- Understand qualitative research paradigms
- Learn and apply various qualitative data collection tools: interviews, focus groups, and observations.
- Formulate a basic topic guide for a qualitative interview
- Practice interview techniques and focus group discussions
- Practice qualitative data analysis
- Discuss Generative AI and Qualitative Research
- Learn and understand ethics in qualitative research
- Discuss strategies for appraising qualitative data
- Apply strategies for appraising qualitative data to peer-reviewed journal articles

Teaching methods and learning activities
This course is all about learning by doing. It is more than studying research methods in theory—you will immediately put them into practice by working in groups to design your own research tools and carry out group projects. Group activities would give everyone the chance to experiment, apply ideas, and learn from one another.
