Programme objectives
This bachelor's degree provides students with a comprehensive grounding in economics, as well as courses in general culture and languages. It also aims to prepare students for master's degrees in economics.
The programme consists of a broad core curriculum, supplemented by optional courses grouped into ‘minors’. Minors allow students to gradually begin their specialisation.
The main purpose of the first block of the bachelor's degree is to introduce the theoretical concepts and quantitative tools necessary for understanding fundamental economic mechanisms. The block is supplemented by general education courses and training in two languages.
The rest of the bachelor's programme is devoted to deepening the economic concepts acquired during the first year.
It is supplemented by in-depth quantitative courses designed to enable students to understand economic models and analyse economic facts. General culture courses are still included, but to a lesser extent, in order to leave more room for economics and quantitative courses. Finally, the programme still includes language courses.
Students can choose one of three minors:
The Analysis minor develops new economic tools and concepts to prepare students for the Master's in Economics with a focus on Economic Governance and Public Policy in Europe.
The Economics and Management minor deepens students' knowledge of economics, management and marketing, preparing them for Master's degrees in Economics with a focus on Business Economics and Management Science.
The Management Engineering minor completes the programme, allowing students to progress to the Master's in Management Engineering (provided they complete an additional 10 credits during the Master's programme).
The Economics minor deepens students' knowledge of economics, complementing their studies at the VUB to enable them to achieve a higher level of proficiency in Dutch.

Teaching team and methods
The teaching methods advocated by Ernest Solvay have earned the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management its reputation. The quality of its programmes is based on a demanding curriculum that combines theory and practice. Students therefore benefit from a high-quality scientific background, rigorous training in economics and management, numerous opportunities for mobility and language learning.
The programmes are constantly being adapted to reflect developments in the various disciplines of economics and management. Recently adapted to changes in the economic world, the teaching methods are based in particular on case studies, seminars and group work. This combination maximises opportunities for interaction between students and teaching staff. The curricula aim to stimulate entrepreneurial spirit, analytical skills, decision-making, listening to others, teamwork and openness to the world.
Support for success is put in place from the start of the programme to enable students, on a voluntary basis, to fill any gaps in their knowledge.
The pilot project ‘My First Year Tailored to Me (PASM)’ was launched in 2021-2022. Its aim is to offer students a non-binding diagnostic test when they enter higher education. This test will enable students to obtain information about their level of secondary school knowledge and skills and to identify their difficulties.
Following this test, tailor-made support will be offered to students, which may include reinforcement of certain subjects and/or a reduction in the course programme. Students will be free to choose what help they receive.

Programme's added value
This versatile programme combines theory and practice and provides students with a comprehensive academic foundation in economics. The programme focuses on economics applied to real-life issues, challenges and problems, and on quantitative methods (mathematics, statistics and econometrics). It is complemented by courses in law, humanities, management, English and Dutch.
