Translational case studies in various diseases -Titulaire: Mariana Igoillo-Esteve & invited expert speakers
The case studies will be discussed in sessions of 2 hours each per disease area under the form of interactive seminars given by experts in the domain, and in inverted classes (group presentations by the students). The case studies will exemplify the translational research process taking a starting point unmet needs related to a certain pathology. Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
Through the discussion of advanced concepts in clinical research, experimental, ethical and economical challenges, as well as successful and failed translational case studies, it is expected that, at the end of the Teaching Unit, the students will manage to:
- Provide the big lines of a translational research proposal focused on the development of a novel diagnostic or therapeutic approach for a given pathology.
- Define the research question and the objective of the study
- Propose an up-to-date pre-clinical research approach to answer this question and provide a rational for this choice.
- Propose a coherent follow-up clinical trial taking into consideration the nature of the disease and target patient population, and draft the study protocol
- Be able to identify potential experimental, ethical, economics and organizational constraints of the proposalbe able to propose alternative approaches
- Defend the project in front of faculty and pairs

Project
Oral presentation
Group work
The students will be evaluated based on the following aspects: inverted class and project
1) Preparation of an inverted class in a particular translational research topic. This is a group work in which the students will prepare a lecture, under the supervision of the expert on the topic, that they will present to the rest of the class. All the group members must participate in the presentation that will be followed by a Q&A session by the students. During this presentation the expert in the topic will play the role of moderator. This work will be evaluated.
2) Preparation of a translational research project. The students will be requested to plan a Translational research proposal aiming to develop a novel therapeutic or diagnostic approach, taking as starting point a given clinical problem belonging to one of the Selected Disease Areas studied during the course.
For the evaluation, the students will be requested to prepare a written proposal (ideally in English) of 6 to 10 pages excluding references, including the points below (a-i) and to present and DEFEND their project orally (oral presentation with electronic support, ideally in English) followed by a discussion with faculty and fellow students.
The Evaluation will take place at the end of April beginning of May (the exact date will be confirmed by the coordinator).
Mark calculation method (including weighting of intermediary marks)
This Teaching Unit will be evaluated on 20 points (maximal score). The Mark will be constructed as follows:
- 30% of the total points will be allocated to the inverted class (max 6 points)
- 70 % of the points will be allocated to the project (max 14 points) with the following considerations:
The oral presentation (organization and content of the slides, way of presenting, clarity) will receive a maximun of 5 points
The capacity of the student to defend and discuss the proposal and correctly answer the questions of the jury will receive a maximum of 6 points
