Part V – Diversity of the living world
                V. A. Viruses and Prokaryotes: as seen in Q1
                V. B. – Elements of Plant and Botanical Biology
                V. C. – Fungi / mushrooms / Eumycetes
                V. D. – Protists / Protozoans
                V. E. – Classes of Invertebrates
                V. F. – Classes of Chordates and Vertebrates
Part VI.– Comparative anatomo-physio: transversal course: study of development and comparative anatomical and physiological study on: 'Evolution of the cranial skeleton: evolution of the skulls and jaws'
Part VII - Developmental biology.

Part V: overview of the classification of living organisms, their characteristics, forms, organization plans, anatomy, physiology, life cycle, biological interests, relationships between species.
Part VI: appearance and evolution of skulls and jaws (structure, mode of operation).
Part VII: various topics in developmental biology: gamete formation, fertilization, embryology of different animal species, experimental embryo, introduction to the human embryo

2) Practical work during the Q2 period: introduction to practice
This practical part: illustration of the theory and contribution of new elements. More specifically, the main topics are closely related to the theoretical course and are:
-Study of the general characteristics and external/internal organization of a mammal
-Description of the structures and functioning of systems in the small dogfish (branchial circulatory system, nervous system, ...)
-Microscopy session to compare the internal and external organization of invertebrates and vertebrates
-Microscopy session devoted to developmental biology.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

At the end of this Teaching Unit (theory and practice), the student must be able to:
* to explain, illustrate, comment on, and discuss the classification of living organisms, their characteristics, forms, organization plans, anatomy, physiology, life cycle, biological interests, and relationships between species.
* to explain, illustrate, and schematize skulls and jaws, and their evolution within living organisms.
* to explain, illustrate, schematize the structure and functioning of living systems, and to compare them.
* to explain, illustrate, and schematize the forms of development, the role of cell division, the different types of eggs, cytological changes, the stages of embryogenesis, experimental embryo experiments.

* to correctly use the equipment used in the lab room (microscope, stereomicroscope, etc.)
* to write a scientific report correctly, and to distinguish between an observation drawing and a connection diagram
* to observe and prepare microscopic sections
* to explain, illustrate, and schematize the structures and functioning of systems studied during lab work

Prerequisites and Corequisites

Required and Corequired knowledge and skills

The prerequisite knowledge is addressed in the BIOLG1106 EU.

Teaching methods and learning activities

1) Theory part:
Lecture given in the audience, illustrated by PowerPoint projections, video, illustrative blackboard drawings, creation of mental maps and summary tables.
Teacher-student interactions for further explanations.
All the educational documents are included in a slide syllabus and/or on the UV.
2) Practical part: sessions in the Bio lab. Individual work during the session. Introductions on the instructions and various topics are given beforehand in the audience. The work plan, work summary and projections are used in the session. All the useful educational documents are available on UV, and two practical course syllabi are for sale at PUB & Dispo on UV.

3) Pedagogical support: In order to best help the student assimilate the material and prepare for the evaluation, pedagogical support is offered:
*Question and answer sessions on theory and practical work
*Guidance (targeted exercise sessions): Permanences supervised by an assistant or assistant during the course, organized in the form of thematic modules to answer specific questions on a particular topic of the course, to summarize this material and prepare for the end-of-year evaluation, in the form of standard exercises. In parallel, on UV, the educational documents used are available.
*Tutoring: Sessions supervised by a student-tutor competent in the subject, and organized in small groups. Objective: review of a specific topic in the course, summary, questions and answers, definition games,
*Ongoing online quizzes
*Assisted blockade

Contribution to the teaching profile

The biology course is an important introduction to life sciences. It initially allows for an upgrade and to fill any gaps due to the different training of students. While studying the fundamental concepts of biology, the different chapters of this course provide a number of prerequisites for further studies (biochemistry, molecular biology, immuno/microbiology, physiology, histology, anatomy, parasitology, ...).
More generally, the biology course (theoretical and practical) aims to give students the opportunity to become familiar with know-how, observation, manipulation and thus gradually develop a critical mind and scientific rigor, basis of our scientific training.

In a more targeted way, the contribution to the teaching profile is to provide:
- Acquire basic scientific knowledge and be rigorous
- Read, analyze, and solve problems
- Work efficiently and accurately
- Demonstrate reasoning
- Demonstrate critical thinking, and know how to be self-critical of results
- Know how to manage and organize your time
- Work in a team and know how to communicate, accurately
- Develop practical skills and acquire skills in order to access internships under the best possible conditions
- Acquire basic scientific knowledge in order to subsequently understand the foundations of medical biology and research

Evaluation

Method(s) of evaluation

  • Practice work
  • written examination
  • Continuous assessment
  • Other

Practice work

written examination

  • Open question with developed answer
  • Closed question with multiple choices (MCQ)

Continuous assessment

Other

This UE includes a theoretical part and a practical part.
1. Theoretical part:
-Continuous evaluation throughout the quadrimester in the form of online quizzes, not mandatory or binding.  Involved in the certification assessment note according to specific instructions developed during the first course. - valid for the relevant term.
-Certification assessment, written, individual, by open questions, and QCMs, organized during the month of May-June (on all subject Q2 theory).
-In case of failure of the certification assessment (below 10/20), a second session is organized in August-September (according to the same terms as those of May-June).
2. Practical part:
-Continuous evaluation throughout the quadrennium (50% of the points during practical sessions).
- End-of-year report (50% of the points) in April/May covering all the work-related assignments for the quadrimester.
The evaluations focus on dissection, report writing, observations, and quality of answers to oral questions on the subject.

Mark calculation method (including weighting of intermediary marks)

-1. Theory part: WRITTEN exam in May-June (on the entire subject of Q2 theory); second session in August (retaking of Q2 theory according to the same methods). A bonus from the quizzes for the May-June session.
-2. Practical part: Final grade = 50% of the TP scores for the quadrennium (lab sessions) + 50% of the lab report organized in April-May.
-3. The success of BIOLG1107 is conditioned by: min 10/20 theory and min 10/20 final grade for practical work.
The EU is therefore conditioned by the success of both parties.
If success of these two parts: Weighting 3 for theory, 1 for practical work.
Only the final note is rounded.
