Course content

Translation exercises from Latin into French and from French into Latin. Analyses of syntactic, semantic and pragmatic topics. Case studies in linguistic history and in lexical morphology.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

Reaching an overall control of the Latin language, especially in its diachronic dimension. Using philological methods. Getting accustomed with translating from Latin into French.

To reach overall control of the basic knowledge and to learn the research methods of the discipline. To compare different synchronic stages of the language. To compare different linguistic systems.

The course includes regular exercices (prepared at home by students), in particular translations from Latin into French and from French into Latin.

Contribution to the teaching profile

Control of Latin language and literature. Development of a method of linguistic analysis of the texts.

Other

Latin: Written exam at the end of each quadrimester, written exam for the exercises at the end of the first quadrimeter.Phonetics: Oral exam about forms analysed during the lessons.

Mark calculation method (including weighting of intermediary marks)

Latin accounts for three quarters of the final note; phonetics, for the last quarter. In case of failure either in Latin or in phonetics, the students are required to retake the corresponding exam(s).
