Course content

Greek religion (uneven academic years): Reassessment of the methods of the history of religions ; historical account of the evolution of Greek religion from pre-Hellenic civilizations to the Roman era ; systematic analysis of the constitutive acts, the protagonists and the places of cult as well as of religious phenomena like the mystery cults, orphism and theurgy. Roman religion (even academic years): Systematic presentation of the history and principal characteristics of Roman religion, i.e. divinities, priests, rites, divination, interactions with philosophy and politics, beginnings of Christianity etc.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

Critical analysis of Greek and Roman religion, based on the methods of the history of religions and on the study of the literary and archaeological evidence.
