Course content
The course aims at learning the advanced empirical tools of modern empirical Industrial Organization. Such tools constitute an important asset for: a) academic empirical research; b) working in public and private institutions active in the domain of competition policy, antitrust, industrial policy and economic analysis of markets; 3) working in private economic consulting.
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Model empirically a market or an industry
- Estimate empirical demand and supply functions
- Model the competition between firms in the market, and assess market competitiveness
- Perform merger simulations
Prerequisites and Corequisites
Required and Corequired knowledge and skills
Attending the course requires a background in econometrics (at least intermediate). Knowledge of the concepts and the models used in industrial organization is an asset but not a strict requirement.
Teaching methods and learning activities
Lectures are divided into theory classes, where empirical models taken from the theory are developed, and empirical classes, where models are estimated based on actual data.
During the course, students will be divided in groups to work on assignments (e.g., perform a merger simulation).
References, bibliography, and recommended reading
The teaching material consists of slides (developed by the instructor) and academic papers.
