Course content

The class focuses on 3 of Shakespeare's plays (see Virtual University for the Set Reading List).

These will above all be approached through detailed textual analysis in close reading combined with historical contextualization.  To complete this twofold approach, it will be possible for students to view excerpts of certain stage or film adaptations (these additional visual materials will be made available to students).

In 2025-2026, students will also have to attend one day of "Shakespeare in a Polarized World," an international conference jointly convened by Waseda University, Birmingham University and ULB (from 6 to 9 March 2026 at the Waseda University Brussels premises).
