Course content

The course focuses on the following topics: 1. American literature and culture from the early stages of colonization to the mid-nineteenth century; 2. African American fiction from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century; 3. Realism and naturalism in US fiction, from the late 19th century to WWII; 4. Modernist fiction in the US.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

To provide students with a good interdisciplinary knowledge of the main currents in American literature and culture; to develop their command of literary interpretation.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Ex cathedra lectures relying on computer slides presentations; close reading of literary selections.
