Course content

The Human Resource Management course examines both the theoretical principles and practical applications of HRM within contemporary organizations. The course addresses six key areas:

  1. Human Resource Planning
  2. Recruitment and Selection
  3. Performance Management and Appraisal
  4. Training and Development
  5. Compensation and Benefits
  6. Contemporary Trends in Human Resource Management

DROI-S3002 (Psychology and Labour Law) is a prerequisite course for GEST-S3001.

This course is part of the Sustainable Development Initiative of the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management (SBS-EM) and contributes to the “Socially Sustainable Organizations” pathway.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

The objective of the Human Resource Management course is to introduce students to the field of Human Resource Management, both from a theoretical perspective and as it is practiced in organizations.

Accordingly, the course consists of:

  1. A theoretical component (supported by lecture slides, academic articles, and additional readings), which is covered during the first semester;
  2. A group-based practical case study conducted within an organization;
  3. A discussion of the case studies and the theoretical concepts they illustrate during the second semester.

The teaching process is organized as follows:

  • During the first semester, students attend six lectures devoted to the theoretical component of the course, delivered by the instructor.
  • During these theoretical sessions, the instructor presents and discusses the key concepts and theoretical frameworks related to the topics covered, while occasionally incorporating practical exercises.
  • Students, working in teams, conduct an analysis of selected Human Resource Management practices through the study of a real organizational case. This case study is carried out during the first semester.
  • The case study reports (the requirements of which are described below) must be submitted at the beginning of March.
  • During the second semester, students devote six class sessions to presenting their case studies.
  • During these case-study sessions, several groups present their findings. All students are expected to familiarize themselves with the case studies, which will be made available on the course website prior to the presentations. Each presentation is followed by a question-and-answer session and class discussion.

Evaluation

Method(s) of evaluation

  • written examination
  • Oral presentation
  • Group work

written examination

Oral presentation

Group work

Assessment methods: Written examination, group project (case study and presentation), and group project conducted as part of the “Socially Sustainable Organizations” initiative.

Mark calculation method (including weighting of intermediary marks)

Assessment and Examination

  • The examination content will include the case studies presented during the dedicated case-study sessions, as well as the discussions and theoretical insights developed during these sessions.
  • The examination content will also include the theoretical material covered during the lecture sessions.
  • The examination aims to assess students’ knowledge and understanding of the course content, particularly through the use of elements drawn from the case studies. Students will therefore be expected not only to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge but also to show their understanding by applying concepts and referring to elements discussed in the cases.
  • Given the nature of the course, there is no resit opportunity for the case-study presentations.
  • As GEST-S3001 is part of the “Socially Sustainable Organizations” initiative, a portion of the final grade is based on the assessment associated with this initiative (see the course website for further details).

Grade Breakdown

The final grade for the Human Resource Management course consists of three components:

  1. Theoretical Examination (Multiple-Choice Test) – 40%
  2. Company Case Study Presentation – 40%
  3. Participation in the “Socially Sustainable Organizations” Seminar – 20%

Balancing Rule Between the Theoretical Examination and the Case Study

To ensure that students engage seriously with both core assessment components (the theoretical examination and the case study), the following balancing rule applies:

  • The combined HRM grade (representing 80% of the final course grade) is calculated with equal weighting:

    • 50% from the theoretical examination (multiple-choice test);
    • 50% from the case study.
  • The combined HRM grade is determined as follows:

    • If both grades (theoretical examination and case study) are ≥ 10/20, or if both grades are < 10/20, the combined grade is the average of the two grades.
    • If one grade is ≥ 10/20 and the other is < 10/20, the combined grade is equal to the lower of the two grades.

This rule is intended to encourage students to invest effort in both assessment components and to prevent strong performance in one component from fully compensating for insufficient effort in the other.

Examples

  • A student receives 16/20 on the multiple-choice examination and 2/20 on the case study. The combined HRM grade is 2/20.
  • A student receives 16/20 on the multiple-choice examination and 10/20 on the case study. The combined HRM grade is 13/20 (the average of the two grades).

Additional Regulations

Please note that:

  • If the assignments related to the seminar activities are not submitted and/or if the work submitted for Seminar 1 is deemed unsatisfactory, a penalty of −1 point will be applied to the final grade for GEST-S3001.
  • If these assignments are not submitted or are failed, they cannot be resubmitted during the resit session.
  • Students who fail the overall GEST-S3001 course at the end of the academic year will be required to complete all course requirements again during the following academic year.

Oral Verification : The course instructor reserves the right to invite any student to an additional oral examination in order to verify the student's individual mastery of the content submitted for assessment.
