At the end of this teaching unit, students will be able to

• Be familiar with and proficient in voice assessment tools and methods (including PRAAT software) so they can perform a voice evaluation;
• Develop a therapy plan;
• Write an assessment report for medical professionals and the insurer;
• Be familiar with and understand tools and methods for treating voice disorders;
• Select appropriate tools and methods for treating voice disorders on the basis of evidence-based practice (EBP).

Required and Corequired knowledge and skills

At the start of this teaching unit, students must

• Be familiar with and understand the anatomy and physiology of phonation and swallowing (cf. LOGO-E3015 Anatomo-physiologie de l’audition, de la phonation et de la déglutition)
• Master concepts and methods in general phonetics (cf. PSYC-E339 Phonétique générale et éléments de phonétique clinique)
• Communicate in excellent spoken and written French (cf. LOGO-E202 Maîtrise de la langue française)

Face-to-face theory class: the instructor engages in active teaching, combining explanatory lectures, audio/video illustrations and clinical scenarios. The course slides available on Université Virtuelle do not represent all the material covered in class, so students are encouraged to take notes. The recommended readings also help students learn more about the concepts addressed in class.

The assessment is a written exam administered during the exam session. The exam consists of two parts:
1) a closed-book section (2/3 of the grade)
2) an open-book section (1/3 of the grade).
The course average is calculated only if both sections receive a grade of 8/20 or higher.

If either of the two grades is less than 8/20, that grade is recorded, and the student is automatically required to retake the failed section(s) (less than 8/20). Consequently, if applicable, the grade for the passed section is carried over from one session to the next (but not from one academic year to the next). 

Attendance at TPs is mandatory. In the event of an absence not supported by a valid excuse, 1 point will be deducted from the overall grade for the open-book exam for each absence.
Students are responsible for notifying the instructor of any tardiness; failure to do so will result in being permanently marked as “absent” for that session.

Spelling and Grammar: 
In both closed-book and open-book exams, -0.5 points per error (spelling or grammar), up to a maximum of -2 points on the course grade.
