Programme objectives
The Master’s programme in Transdisciplinary Studies of Climate, Environment and Energy (TRACEE) is a collaborative initiative designed within the CIVIS alliance. This innovative Master's programme aims to equip students with transdisciplinary expertise to address the complex challenges of our time, focusing on climate, environment, and energy. It features an integrated curriculum co-created by scholars from CIVIS member universities that promote diverse academic perspectives across Europe and Africa. The vision, target group of students and intended learning outcomes are presented hereafter.
Teaching team and methods
As students will pass through different universities they will be exposed to a wide diversity of pedagogical teams and methods, ranging from ex cathedra lectures, over practical sessions,to living labs and project based learning.
In general terms it is good to know that the teaching will be during normal working hours, will be hybride (combining on site and on line), and will be in English.
For each course the modalities of the evaluation will be communicated. This ranges from written exams, over individual and collective works, to intermediate evaluations. Next to the courses, a potential internship and the master dissertation will be essential parts of bringing this master program till a good end.

Programme's added value
The vision which forms the foundation for this programme is for students with a solid disciplinary background to become transdisciplinary graduates capable of tackling the world's most pressing challenges — climate change, energy transitions, and environmental crises.
This programme is intended for students who are seeking (i) a career working at a local, regional, national, European or even global level on the ongoing societal transformation (e.g., as expressed by the European Green Deal), or (ii) a future in transdisciplinary research focusing on climate, environment and/or energy.
The programme is open to students with academic qualifications from an internationally recognized university equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in any discipline, English proficiency equivalent to level B2 on the CEFR scale (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is also required.
This sets the entry requirements for the programme itself and for obligatory courses within the programme. The entry requirements for some study tracks are discipline-specific. However, study pathways exist for students with any background.
The TRACEE Master is delivered through the collaboration of 11 universities within the CIVIS alliance where the credits of the master programme are distributed following the selected study paths of the student and the integrated mobility.
The programme results from a collaborative design within the CIVIS alliance including the partners below and their respective acronym that will be used hereafter in the student handbook:
• Aix-Marseille University (AMU)
• National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)
• Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB)
• University of Bucharest (UB)
• University of Glasgow (UofG)
• University of Lausanne (UNIL)
• Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM)
• Sapienza University of Rome (SUR)
• Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS)
• Stockholm University (SU)
• Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (UT)
CIVIS has six associate partners from African countries, these are: Makerere University, Uganda, Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique, Université Hassan II de Casablanca, Morocco, University of Sfax, Tunisia, Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar, Senegal, and University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. The six African partners may be involved in parts of the delivery of certain courses in the Programme.
