M. DUCENE:We see the history of the medieval Middle East in two parts.First part: pre-Islamic Arabia, the biography of Muhammad, the birth of the Muslim state and its political structure, the orthodox caliphs, the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties, the history of Muslim Spain and Maghreb until the 11th century. Second part: the Fatimids, the Seljuks, the impact of the Crusades, the Ayyubids, arrival of the Mongols, the Mamluks; in North Africa, we see the Almoravid and Almohads dynasties.M.DYE :First part: The historical context of nascent Islam: the Arabic peninsula and the Middle East in the 7th century AD; Muhammad's life and his spiritual experience; Structure and content of the Qur'ân; The Development of the sunna; Islam's basic tenets (tawhîd, 'adl, sharî'a, 'ibâdât, mu'âmalât...); Islamic religious sciences (fiqh, tafsîr, hadîth, kalâm).Second part: Schisms in islam; Shi'ism; Soufism and Islamic mysticism; Modern and contemporary reformism and fondamentalism
