How can we approach contemporary East Asia without a solid understanding of its major regional actors? This course, designed for undergraduate students in Chinese and Japanese studies, offers essential foundations for understanding the cultural, historical, and social dynamics that have shaped China and Japan throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

Identify and explain major issues in East Asia over the long term (circulations, conflicts, interdependencies)
Illustrate these issues with concrete examples drawn from the region corresponding to their language of study
