Course content

Chronology of events, aspects of history and civilization of Poland, presented in thematic blocks related to institutions and cultural issues; for example: censorship, home, leisure, Church, parliament, women, etc.. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between the contemporary situation and historical background. This course-taught in French-illustrated by film extracts as well as photographs and slides. Regular deciphering of proper names, place names, proverbs, sayings and songs contribute to making the introduction to the Polish language fun, and to grasping the linguistic system of the language.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

Acquire an overview of the company and the Polish nation today and its evolution through the centuries. Gain a good basic knowledge of Polish culture and its role in the history of Poland and Europe. Learn the Polish alphabet and phonetics in order to cope with reading, to know how to use dictionaries and maps, as well as to be able to travel to Poland in real life and also through selected reading.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course ex catedra is illuminated by photographs, slides and documentary films. Guest speakers are also planned as part of this course.

Contribution to the teaching profile

Developing critical thinking skills; Understanding cultural issues; Learning to compare different historical and cultural perspectives; Researching skills; Theory and practice of Polish language (A1 level).

Continuous assessment (assessment tests, presentations, homework) which provides a grade in January and a grade in June. 

Attention: in the second session (August-September) the grade is based on an oral examination and a written test. 

Construction of the grade (including the weighting of partial grades)
The total of the January and June marks. 
The mark for the second session is composed of : 50% for the written part and 50% for the oral part.
