Course content

This course is organised around the following topics:

1) A brief presentation of sociology and anthropology;

2) Sociological and anthropological perspectives on mobilities;

3) Temporalities and social sciences; and

4) Conclusion: key lessons from the social sciences

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

The course is part of the core curriculum (tronc commun) of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences and aims to provide a brief general introduction to sociology and anthropology as social science disciplines. It highlights their similarities and differences through discussions of two of the widely studied themes in the disciplines: temporalities and mobilities. By the end of the course, students will be able to explain what sociology and anthropology are and identify some of the converging and diverging points between these disciplines from conceptual, methodological, and empirical points of view.

Prerequisites and Corequisites

Required and Corequired knowledge and skills

Students should have a B1 level in English to understand and follow the lectures in this course, participate in short exercises in each class, read the course syllabus, and analyze the required texts for the separate practical work sessions (travaux pratiques) related to the course.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course comprises ex-cathedra lectures and short exercises. Other learning activities related to this course are offered to students during separate practical work sessions.
