Insect Service and Biodiversity in Agroecological Farming.

The ISeBAF project aims to provide a benchmark test case with a first quantitative description of the relationships between agroecological agriculture, insect biodiversity and cucurbit production, by comparing agroecological and conventional farms in the Morogoro region (central-eastern Tanzania).

More specifically, the project focuses on the biodiversity of pollinating insects - especially bees and hoverflies - and pests - especially fruit flies. As for cucurbits, they are commonly cultivated in Tanzania: watermelon, cucumber and pumpkin.

This project will contribute to the development of more sustainable agriculture in Africa and make it possible to explore alternative paths to traditional food production and consumption. It will also produce relevant information in a national context, identifying obstacles and opportunities in the implementation of agroecology as an alternative and transitional food system.
