Course content

Divided in three parts: 1) Scientific investigation of works of art. Description of the methods used (their principle, the type of information they give, the limits of the information). 2) Analysis of painting techniques (14th-17th C.): Easel and mural paintings. 3) Analysis of woodden and stone sculptures and altarpieces (techniques of polychromy), stain-glass windows and others …

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

Recognize the making of a work of art and analyse its material history by following its genese in order to understand the artist’s formal intentions.

Exercices of reading technical documents are given at the Centre de Recherches et d'Etudes technologiques des Arts plastiques (CRETAP)
