Course content
The course consists in a comprehensive reading of Descartes’ Meditations on first philosophy, and of Spinoza’s Ethics (parts one to three).
The student must read and study a passage for each course session (the program of required readings and of study questions is made available on the université virtuelle at the beginning of the course).
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
The course is an introduction to the key issues (mainly metaphysical and epistemological) of two major books of Modern Philosophy, which goes along and determines the rise of a mathematical science of nature. A particular stress will be put on the method of reading philosophical texts.

Ex cathedra course on the texts.

Other
Written exam (4 hours) consisting in two exercises: a question about the entire course, and an explanation of a text taken from one of the books to study.
Mark calculation method (including weighting of intermediary marks)
Each of both exercices can earn a maximum of 10 points.
