Course content

Issues commonly addressed in clinical health psychology include psychophysiological disorders, psychological conditions resulting from physical illness, somatic manifestations of psychological conditions, psychological symptoms associated with organic disease, physical symptoms amenable to behavioural interventions, behavioural risk factors for illness and disability, prevention of complications associated with stressful medical procedures, and issues involving health care providers and health care systems.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

The clinical health psychology course will focus on:
- the study of the links between certain psychological and behavioural factors and the onset and/or progression of psychosomatic conditions and chronic diseases. It will address some of the psychological aspects associated with the prevention, screening, treatment and palliation of chronic diseases in adults.
- The course will focus on the study of the reactions of subjects confronted with somatic illness and the interventions that can be developed by psychologists in these contexts (communication, preparation, support, psychotherapy).
It will address the problems via a biopsychosocial approach integrating psychoimmunological, psychoneuroendocrinological, psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioural, family and systemic approaches.

Prerequisites and Corequisites

Required and Corequired knowledge and skills

The course is only open to students enrolled in the Master in Clinical Psychology and Psychopathology.

Theoretical course.

Contribution to the teaching profile

The course will allow students to improve their skills in the analysis of problems arising in the field of study of clinical health psychology. It will address the main theories and methodological approaches relevant to this field.
