Course content


Selection of authors from recent Polish literature of the 20th and 21st centuries.
In practice:
- to emphasize the transcendent dimension of the literary work and its power by means of :
- the analysis of the literary work, its anchorage in society and its influence beyond borders, time, stereotypes,
- the analysis of the polyphonic dimension of the literary work and the reception of the texts (performance, publishing, concert, awards)
- comparison between the production and reception of the original and translated literary work,
- confrontation with other literary works and their transformation (especially European) and their historical context, development of critical thinking.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

To acquire knowledge of the specificities of contemporary Polish literature and its role in contemporary Polish and European society. To strengthen the visibility of the links between literature and historical and societal factors. Through a selection of works of Polish literature, reading and analysis, to emphasize the factors of evolution and transformation of a country and its place among other countries. To give the necessary tools for the understanding of cultural and societal transformation.
 

Prerequisites and Corequisites

Required and Corequired knowledge and skills

According to the relevant regulations of the LTC faculty and the ULB. 

Teaching methods and learning activities

Partly ex cathedra, partly illustrated with photos, documentary films and Power Point presentations; partly with exercises on different literary forms. Guest speakers are also scheduled as part of the course.

Contribution to the teaching profile

To develop critical thinking, to understand intertextuality, to master literary genres and their evolution and to acquire techniques of analysis and interpretation of texts. In coherence with the programme of the other courses, to better mark the progress of the students and also, through targeted exercises, the individual progress of each student.

Continuous assessment (presentations, homework and assessed exercises).

In the second session, the final mark is composed of two marks: an oral test and a written assignment (in equal parts).

Mark calculation method (including weighting of intermediary marks)

The final grade is the sum of all points.
