Course content
I. Introduction
II. Water Cycle and Hydrogeological Water Balance
III. Definitions and Hydrogeological Contexts
IV. Hydrogeological Properties and Darcy’s Law
V. Pumping Tests
VI. Fundamentals of Hydrogeochemistry and Solute Transport
VII. Study of (Hydro)geological Maps
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
The objectives of the course are to:
- Provide students with a scientific foundation and appropriate terminology enabling them to integrate the groundwater aspect into any environmental approach;
- Learn how to quantify, characterize, and manage groundwater resources;
- Familiarize students with environmental issues related to the protection and exploitation of aquifers.
Teaching methods and learning activities
The course is delivered through diaporama class material and illustrated with numerous practical examples. Several exercise sessions provide students with the opportunity to apply the concepts covered in the lectures (e.g., hydrogeological water balances, groundwater flow, and solute transport, pumping tests).
Some sessions are devoted to the study and interpretation of hydrogeological maps. A half-day field trip is organized to illustrate some of the concepts covered during the course.
