Course content

The purpose of this seminar is to help start-up’s refine (or reevaluate) their strategy. Each students group will work closely with one start-up company, and armed with their theoretical background and tools, describe and analyse its market positioning, its strategy and its performance. Then, depending on the performance, and in close collaboration with the start-up’s management and/or shareholders, they will suggest development or reorientation of the strategy. Doing so, they will highlight the risks and the resources requirement of this development or reorientation.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

The objectives of this seminar is to provide strategic recommendations that can actually been implemented by actual companies. Students will be expected to .

  • Apply the strategic concepts and frameworks that they have learned,
  • Take into account the perspectives of the management, the shareholders and the interested parties,
  • Look beyond the present choices and try to offer a fresh perspective, differentiating between constraints that can’t profitably be overcome and the ones that could,
  • Propose, as the case may be, a revised strategy or a refined one in a way that is convincing to the management and/or the shareholders.

Each group of students will be assigned to an actual start-up company. As a conclusion to the seminar, the groups will present their analysis and their conclusions both to the management of said companies and to the whole class.
Three introductory sessions will be provided to frame the projects and to refresh the main theoretical perspectives.
An intermediary presentation will be done by all groups in front of the class to ensure that each group is progressing in the right direction and at the right tempo, and possibly to inspire the other groups.
Individual coaching sessions will be provided as required.
