Course content

The course will cover the major concepts, subjects and ideas central to the practice of history, as well as the major historiographical schools, from the earliest forms of history to the most recent, including gender history, global history and the much-debated link between history and literature.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

Introduction to critical thinking about history and the profession of historian, focusing in particular on epistemological questions relating to historical knowledge, as well as the narrative challenges of writing history.

Lecture course based in particular on the book listed in the bibliography.

Students can already draw on the contributions included in the two volumes of the volume Historiographies. Concepts et Débats, edited by Ch. Delacroix et al. (Paris, Folio Histoire, 2010).

Contribution to the teaching profile

The course draws on cross-disciplinary skills from the historical approach, encouraging critical thinking, methodological rigour, consideration of the challenges of a globalised world, and the need to place reflection within a diachronic (long-term) framework.

Mark calculation method (including weighting of intermediary marks)

The written examination consists of two open-ended questions worth 14 points and two to four semi-open-ended questions (definitions, explanations) worth the remaining 6 points.
