Néerlandais I

The acquisition of fundamental language skills (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, spoken and written production), enabling students to further develop their knowledge of Dutch independently.

This course is intended for students of political science. Various current topics are covered during the classes (political, social, cultural, etc.), using authentic materials and a variety of activities, including discussions, conversation tables, presentations, listening-comprehension exercises, text reading, vocabulary exercises, and more.

The course aims to activate and build upon the basic knowledge acquired in secondary education, implying the practical and contextual use of vocabulary and grammar. Above all, this is an interactive course (including small-group activities) with a strong emphasis on spoken communication, while also fostering the development of other language skills, namely listening comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression.

By the end of the second year of the Bachelor's programme, students are expected to be able to communicate both orally and in writing in correct Dutch, corresponding to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Courses requiring this course

• Language practice (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, spoken and written production) in small groups.
• Independent language practice through a portfolio.

Without the active participation of students, this course cannot achieve its intended objectives. It is therefore essential, in the students' own interest, that they participate actively in the various types of activities offered.

First Session

The assessment consists of the following components:

• An oral examination in June (50%): a conversation/discussion with another student on the topics covered in the syllabus.

• Continuous assessment (50%):

  Q1:

  • A portfolio (carrying out activities in Dutch and reporting on them in a digital portfolio on the UV platform), together with an oral assessment (an interview with your lecturer about your portfolio activities) (20%).

  Q2:

  • A pair presentation, followed by a class discussion (15%).
  • An oral assessment (a conversation/discussion with another student on the topics covered in the syllabus) (15%).

• A bonus point (0.5 or 1 point added to the final grade), awarded on the basis of your commitment and active participation in class.

Second Session

The assessment consists of the following components:

• An oral examination, accounting for a minimum of 50% and a maximum of 100% of the final grade.
• Your overall mark for the various assignments (continuous assessment) obtained during the first session, provided that this mark is at least 10/20 (50%).*
• Any bonus point awarded for active class participation.

* If your overall mark for the various assignments completed during the first session is below 10/20, this mark will no longer be taken into account in August. However, you will have the opportunity to submit a new portfolio in August, which may count for 30% of your final grade. In that case, the August oral examination will account for 70% of the final grade.

Please note: this portfolio assignment is subject to specific guidelines (which are not exactly the same as those applied during the academic year). The assessment of this new portfolio also includes an individual interview with your lecturer about the portfolio.

For students who do not submit a new portfolio in August and do not participate in the portfolio interview, the oral examination will account for 100% of the final grade.
