Histoire et culture japonaises II

Bringing together literary history, book history, and the sociology of literature, this course explores Japanese literature from its origins to the present through the material and social conditions of its production and circulation. Designed for undergraduate students, it examines how media, publishing practices, and relationships between authors and readers help shape literary works and genres.

Through the study of texts and their material forms, the course traces changes in literary practices, from manuscript transmission and the development of print to the rise of the publishing industry and digital publishing. Students will explore how media, publication formats, and relationships among authors, publishers, and readers influence writing, the development of literary genres, and the recognition of literary works.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

- Situate major changes in Japanese literary practices within the history of writing, books, and publishing.
- Analyse a literary text in relation to its medium, publication format, and conditions of production and circulation.
