Course content

The course covers the principal methods and tools of univariate and multivariate descriptive statistics, regression analysis, and inferential statistics. For each of these topics, students learn not only the underlying theoretical concepts but also their practical implementation in the R environment, from data preparation and management through to the execution and interpretation of statistical analyses.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

This course, designed for students with a background in or pursuing studies in the humanities and social sciences, has two main objectives:

  • to provide students with a solid foundation in statistics, placing particular emphasis on the fundamental concepts and the intuitions that underpin them, while avoiding an excessively formal mathematical treatment;
  • to introduce students to the R programming language for the implementation, exploration, and analysis of statistical procedures and data.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures and hands-on practical exercises carried out on students' personal computers. These exercises are designed to provide immediate application of the statistical concepts introduced during the lectures and to familiarize students with their implementation in the R environment. Through this practical approach, students progressively develop both their statistical reasoning skills and their proficiency in using R for data analysis.

Evaluation

Method(s) of evaluation

  • Oral presentation

Oral presentation

Assessment is based on an oral presentation of the results of a data analysis selected by the student from a set of datasets provided by the instructor and prepared in advance. During the presentation, students are asked questions designed to assess their understanding of the statistical concepts and models they have used, either in direct relation to their analysis or more broadly with respect to the material covered in the course.

With regard to the use of generative artificial intelligence tools, the procedures for this course follow those set out for dissertations and TPMs in the “Dissertation Guide”.

The course lecturer reserves the right to summon any student who has submitted an assessment for the course in question in order to verify their personal understanding of the content of the assessment submitted, particularly where inconsistencies in the assessment prevent the lecturer from correctly assessing the student’s level of mastery of the knowledge and skills covered by the course.
