Course content

This course examines international migrations in Europe from a theoretical and an empirical angle. Following a detailed overview of the most important concepts and theoretical frameworks for the analysis of international migrations, students focus on the major trends and transformations characterizing international migrations and their management from and to the EU as well as within it (and beyond). Importantly, the course is split in two complementary parts of 12 hours each, which are taught by two different lecturers: Giacomo Orsini (the course coordinator) and Laszlo Andor. Given their different disciplinary backgrounds, lecturers focus on diverse dimensions of migration as it unfolds within the same geographical, political and social space – i.e., Europe/the EU.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

Students are expected to familiarize with a variety of theoretical approaches for the study of international migrations mainly in relation to the EUropean context and learn how to apply these conceptual frameworks to the analysis of current and past migratory trends and relevant case studies.

The final evaluation is based on the average of two different exams. As for the half taught by Giacomo Orsini, students are evaluated 70% based on the results of a final oral exam to be held online (i.e., with open book) in November or December, with the remaining 30% being determined by students' active engagement and attendance in class. Concerning the part of the module handled by Laszlo Andor, students are evaluated based on a written exam with both open and multiple choice questions.
