"BULLES D’AIR" (BREATHING SPACE) PROGRAMME: SHORT-TERM STAYS FOR INTERNATIONAL ACADEMICS AT ULB

The Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) has decided to offer special funding to academics who, due to a crisis situation (internal or international armed conflict, political instability, and so forth.), are no longer able to pursue their academic activities in peaceful conditions in their country of origin.

The aim of this grant is to provide academics with “breathing space”, so that they can devote themselves fully to their research in a calm, safe environment. The grant covers a stay of between one to three months.
Recipients of these grants will be able to pursue their academic projects and carry out research in a ULB centre or laboratory in close collaboration with a member of ULB's academic staff.

Eligibility criteria

  • Hold a doctorate and an academic post at their home university;
  • Be currently in a situation where it is no longer possible to pursue their academic activities in peace, for example because of an internal or international armed conflict;
  • Be able to remain in Belgium for the duration of the planned stay;
  • Have a good knowledge of French or English;
  • Have previously collaborated with a ULB professor in order to facilitate his/her integration into the university.  

Selection criteria

  • The social/political situation and/or pressure to which the academic is subjected prevents him/her from pursuing his/her work;
  • The scientific calibre of the candidate, and the research project;
  • The ability to integrate into ULB's academic community.

The grant covers

  • Accommodation on the ULB campus
  • Transport (to and from).
  • Per diem : 78€ /day.
