    Presentation

This Master offers an excellent 2-year training (120 credits) on the European Union. It provides students with the intellectual and practical skills to become specialists of Europe. At the end of the programme, they will master in depth key issues for Europe’s past, present and future, and they will have solid knowledge on the functioning of the European Union. The Master also offers students many opportunities to meet practitioners in EU affairs and to prepare the start of their professional career.

Applicants can choose between three tracks:

The ‘EU politics and policy’ track focusses on the institutions and policies of the European Union. It is rooted in research and day-to-day practice, and offers a comprehensive training centered on the making of public policy at EU level as well as on actors of EU politics, in relation with developments in European societies. It also deals with relationships between EU Member States and the role of the EU and its policies internationally.

The ‘EU-Asia’ track enables students to specialise in the study of relations between the EU and Asia. It leads students to complete a double degree from the ULB and Waseda University by spending the first year at ULB and the second year in Tokyo, Japan. They will acquire a solid background on the historical, political, legal, economic, and socio-cultural dimensions of regional integration in Europe as well as in Asia.

The ‘EUROSUD’ track offers an in-depth multidisciplinary specialization focused on the political, economic, and social dynamics of Southern Europe, in connection with the policies and institutions of the European Union. It enables students to obtain a multiple degree from ULB, the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), and the Sapienza Universita di Roma (SUR). Students spend the first year of the master’s program in Madrid, then the second year in Brussels (semester 3) and in Rome (semester 4). The program is taught entirely in English.

Teaching is to combine training through lecture and practice. It notably emphasizes inter-sectoral contacts (e.g. negotiation simulations, field surveys, interactions with practitioners, internships). New technologies and e-learning are an integral component of the teaching provided to the students.

MES students can seize upon the opportunities provided by the department’s numerous Erasmus program agreements to include a mobility action in their training curriculum.

    • A high-level multidisciplinarity academic program supported by a specialized faculty
    • A privileged location in Brussels, the capital of the European Union and headquarters of many political institutions
    • A very international student body and faculty with a variety of identities, languages and national cultures represented
    • A tradition of excellence in the field of European Studies since the IEE is one of the oldest Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence (i.e. since 1963 ) as well as a recognized forum for high-level debates on the EU and its future.

    Programme

The Master in European Studies is a program taught both in English and French, is resolutely open to multidisciplinarity.

The programme includes a common module with courses in fundamental disciplines of European studies, namely history, political science, law, economics and international relations.
The methodological research seminar helps students prepare their Master thesis, and they will also engage with professionalisation activities (a namely a seminar and an intership) in order to prepare their transition towards work.

Depending on the chosen track, students will follow different study paths:

The “European Politics” track, bilingual and entirely organized at ULB, offers specialized courses focusing on current issues (inequalities, the environment, digitalization, the rule of law) and aimed at developing practical skills (negotiation simulations).

The “EU–Asia” track, organized within the framework of the ULB–Waseda double degree, offers a specialization in relations between the European Union and Asia through courses taught at Waseda University.

The “EUROSUD” track is part of an international program jointly organized by a consortium of universities that are members of the CIVIS Alliance. The program offers an in-depth, multidisciplinary specialization centred on the political, economic, and social dynamics of Southern Europe. Students spend the first year of the master’s program in Madrid, then the second year in Brussels (semester 3) and Rome (semester 4). The program is taught entirely in English.

    What's next ?

    Prospects

Students can aspire to as many different careers as there are professions associated with Europe. Beyond EU and international institutions, they might apply for jobs in a myriad of consultancies, interest groups (including private firms and NGOs) or regions’ representation offices. Furthermore, at local and national level, most institutions nowadays include a EU affairs department. Finally, the Master gives access to a doctoral training for completing a PhD.
