Objectifs (et/ou acquis d'apprentissages spécifiques)

  • Develop specific knowledge about concepts and theories relevant to the EU’s action in the social domain
  • Develop specific knowledge about the relevant policy making procedures and actors
  • Discuss ongoing and policy issues facing national governments, the EU institutions and civil society/citizens
  • Present and discuss political controversies in the realm

Connaissances et compétences pré-requises ou co-requises

This course requires at least a basic knowledge of the EU political system.

Méthodes d'enseignement et activités d'apprentissages

This course unfolds through 8 sessions of a three hour duration. The sessions will be as interactive as interactive as possible: lecturing time is limited/replaced by student input on textbook chapters, pros & cons debates, 1/2/all, etc.as well as dsicussions of student presentations.

Contribution au profil d'enseignement

The course complements students' general knowledge of EU policy making with more specific knowledge of policies, theories and topical debates pertaining to social issues in the EU.

Presentation on a proposed case study: alone or in tandem with another student
Reading report: written report on compulsory reading to be uploaded prior to each session on the UV + report orally in class once during the term
Exam: 20-minute oral exam

Construction de la note (en ce compris, la pondération des notes partielles)

  • Oral presentation of case study (10-15 minutes) : 30% of final mark
  • Exam: 70%  of final mark
    • Oral exam – 20 minutes
    • Pick one question randomly: broader « essay » question (e.g: « Is there such a thing as a European social model?)
      • Prepare for 5 minutes
      • Give a 5 minute presentation
    • Further questions on other aspects of the course
