Contenu du cours

Preliminary remark: The acoustics course MECA-H534 is not a "new" course but has been taught by the same teacher since 2001 even if it has changed several times of title, organization and schedule.

The course is a general introduction to engineering acoustics and covers the following topics: [I] Introduction (1) Defintion and scope of acoustics, (2) relevance to engineers, [II] Acoustics quantities (1) Pressure, (2) Density, (3) Velocities, (4) Intensities and power. [III] Key acoustic phenomena (1) Propagation and attenuation, (2) Reflection and absorption, (3) Resonances, (4) Guided propagation, (5) Radiation and diffraction, (6) Interaction of a sound field with a flexible structure, (7) Transmission and insulation. [IV] Applications to room acoustics and vehicle design. Other applications may be discussed depending on the interest of the students.

Objectifs (et/ou acquis d'apprentissages spécifiques)

The goal of the course is to equip the students with the physical insight and mathematical tools required to analyze acoustic problems and to design acoustically efficient systems.

Pré-requis et Co-requis

Connaissances et compétences pré-requises ou co-requises

The main pre-requisite is a good knowledge of standard mathematical concepts and tools used in engineering.

There is a strong connection between acoustics and vibrations BUT the course on structural dynamics and vibrations is NOT a pre-requisite.

Méthodes d'enseignement et activités d'apprentissages

The course being given in six weeks, at the rythm of 8 hours a week, lectures and exercises are mixed during the sessions. There is therefore NOT a specific schedule for the lectures and a specific, separate, schedule for the exercises. Depending on the interest of the students, part of the time devoted to exercises may be devoted to "virtual" acoustics labs using the ACTRAN acoustic CAE tool.

Références, bibliographie et lectures recommandées

A full syllabus in French and English will be provided to the students. The PowerPoint slides used will be shared with the students. YouTube videos covering most topics are available.
