Les systèmes de communication sans fil tels que le Wi-Fi sont basés sur des échanges de paquets d'information numérique. Ces systèmes évoluent constamment afin de supporter les très hauts débits de communications attendus par les utilisateurs, et de nouvelles fonctionnalités telle que la localisation précise des terminaux mobiles en environnement intérieur et le sensing de l'environnement. Ce cours aborde les différentes technologies intégrées dans les modems Wi-Fi récents.

Objectifs (et/ou acquis d'apprentissages spécifiques)

Ce cours a pour objectif général de:
  • Revoir les phénomènes de propagation des ondes tels que le délai de phase, le fading et la sélectivité fréquentielle;
  • Concevoir un modem de communications sans fil, de localisation des terminaux et de sensing de l'environnement robuste à ces dégradations;
  • Mettre en œuvre le système de communication, de localisation et de sensing à l'aide de simulations Matlab et par l'échange de signaux avec hardware;
  • Sélectionner les paramètres permettant d'obtenir le meilleur compromis entre les performances et la complexité hardware.
Les sujets suivants seront plus particulièrement abordés:
  • Space diversity, maximum ratio combining
  • Space-time block codes
  • MIMO channel capacity, spatial multiplexing
  • Beamforming, MU-MIMO precoding
  • Channel coding, convolutional codes, LDPC
  • Iterative channel decoder
  • Multiple access, CSMA, OFDMA
  • Localization, sensing and applications

Méthodes d'enseignement et activités d'apprentissages

Il est proposé d'étudier un des aspects de la conception d'un modem Wi-Fi sous forme de question à aborder en groupe. Différents types de questions sont proposés: des questions plus théoriques supportées par un ensemble de transparents, des questions plus pratiques avec une composante hardware, des questions plus exploratives nécessitant d'aborder la litérature scientifique... L'avancement des groupes est discuté chaque semaine en grand groupe pour favoriser les échanges.
A la fin du cours, une présentation des résultats et un rapport bref sont attendus.
