Contenu du cours

1. Introduction to interfaces 2. Physics of interfaces: Mechanical, thermal and electrical properties 3. The solid-liquid interface: thin-film fabrication methods and physics of plasmons 4. Self-assembly: Biophysics of cell membranes 5. Surface-sensitive characterization methods at the nano and meso-scales

Objectifs (et/ou acquis d'apprentissages spécifiques)

Upon the course completion the students should be able to -Understand and describe properties of free liquid surfaces, such as surface tension, wetting and spreading. -Understand and describe electrical phenomena at surfaces, such as surface charge, surface potential, the electrical double layer- Describe methods for the preparation and characterization of thin inorganic and organic films on surfaces, in particular physical vapour deposition and thin organic films (self-assembled monolayers and lipid bilayers).- Understand the physics of self-assembly, paying special attention to the biophysics of lipid membranes Describe the function and principles for common methods and instruments for surface and thin film analysis, as well as explain and interpret the information that can be obtained from these techniques

Contribution au profil d'enseignement

The aim of this course is to give an overview of the basic properties, characterization tools and applications of surfaces and interfaces. The course provides a general introduction to surfaces and their physical properties, as well as interfaces between solids, liquids and soft matter liquids. This includes hard surfaces (crystalline metals), soft matter surfaces (molecular and biomolecular films) and colloidal systems. The course introduces relevant analytical techniques for studies of surfaces, interfaces, thin films and colloids. Current applications will also be discussed.
