Contenu du cours

This course approaches health as a social phenomenon resulting from the interaction between individuals, populations and their environments. It introduces the main social, economic, demographic, environmental and psychosocial determinants of health and examines their contribution to social inequalities in health.

Particular attention is given to the concepts of health inequalities and health equity, the social gradient in health, and the mechanisms through which living conditions and social contexts influence mortality, morbidity, well-being and the use of health services.

Objectifs (et/ou acquis d'apprentissages spécifiques)

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • identify the main contextual factors and social determinants of health;
  • distinguish between health differences, inequalities and inequities;
  • analyse the influence of socioeconomic, demographic, environmental and psychosocial factors on health;
  • understand key mechanisms contributing to the production and reproduction of social inequalities in health;
  • apply a critical and equity-oriented perspective to public health issues.

Contribution au profil d'enseignement

The course strengthens students’ methodological and analytical competencies for examining public health problems within their social and contextual environments. It develops their ability to identify and operationalise relevant determinants, critically interpret health inequalities and their measurement, and integrate an equity-oriented perspective into public health analysis.
