Monetary theory

Explore the role played by money in modern economies through four lenses:

• the financial system, financial markets and intermediaries
• supply and demand of money
• banks, systemic crises and banking regulation
• monetary policy

The course should help students understand:

• The economic functions of money and the mechanisms of money creation.
• The role of banks, central banks, and financial markets in the monetary system.
• The objectives, instruments, and effects of monetary policy.
• Students will learn applying the concepts covered in the course to the analysis of contemporary monetary issues.

Connaissances et compétences pré-requises ou co-requises

• Principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics.
• Basic economic concepts: inflation, interest rates, growth, savings, investment.
• Reading and interpreting economic data.
• Analytical reasoning and rigor in economic argumentation.

Traditional lecture with references, bibliography, and recommended readings.

The instructor reserves the right to invite any student to a supplementary oral exam in order to verify the student’s personal mastery of the content of the submitted exam, particularly when inconsistencies found in the exam prevent the instructor from properly assessing the student’s level of mastery of the knowledge and skills covered in the course.
