This course addresses the relatively new field of environmental health psychology, sometimes referred to as psychology of planetary health. It recognises the importance of the natural environment for individual health. Topics that will be addressed in this course include (non-exhaustive list):
  • Health and the environment:
    • How does poor environment contribute to worse health
      • How does nature and green environment contribute to better health and well-being, e.g.
        • Nature connectedness
        • Restorative environments
        • Blue space – green space
        • Policy interventions
  • Health behaviour and pro-environmental behaviour
    • Co-beneficial behaviours
    • Shared determinants
    • Spill-over between health and pro-environmental behaviours
  • Adaptation behaviour as the 2nd path to promoting environmental health
    • Key adaptation behaviours
    • Determinants of adaptation
    • Interventions
  • Social issues in environmental health psychology
    • Climate change and health deniers
    • Systemic change
    • Environmental justice issues
Due to the permanent evaluation of this course, attendance is mandatory. After one unjustified absence, the student will no longer be able to take the course or participate in its evaluation.

Objectifs (et/ou acquis d'apprentissages spécifiques)

Understand key concepts, issues, evidence and models in environmental health psychology
Being able to critically evaluate elements at different levels (e.g., ethical, different levels of socio-ecological models)
Being able to contribute to novel insights and directions for advancing the evidence (e.g. in group discussions)
Capable of applying the existing knowledge to concrete cases

The course will use partly permanent evaluation. On selected topics, students will work in groups and present their work to the rest of the student in one or more oral presentations. This permanent evaluation counts for 12/20 points. They will also be asked to write a personal paper on selected topics, that counts for 8/20. All evaluation is based the in-class participation, peer evaluation, group exercises and presentations, and the paper. There is no written/oral exam for this course.

Due to the permanent evaluation for this course, there is no possibility to do resits for this course in second session.
