This is an English for Specific Academic Purposes course designed for social scientists.
The syllabus is divided into different units focusing on a range of topics to give student the skills they need to write academic English and carry out a research project.
These topics will be explored by means of discussions, written assignments, reading and listening activities and presentations.
Vocabulary input is linked to the topics studied, and includes academic vocabulary aimed at improving expression in an academic context.

Objectifs (et/ou acquis d'apprentissages spécifiques)

To enable students to understand and critically engage with articles and spoken discourse, both journalistic and academic.
To enable students to understand extended spoken discourse of both academic and semi-academic nature, and to take notes on content.
To enable students to carry out research into a topic of their choice and conduct a brief literature review.
To enable students to give a presentation based on their aforementioned research

Méthodes d'enseignement et activités d'apprentissages

The course will be delivered in two-hour sessions on campus. 
Outside of these contact hours, students are expected to carry out certain tasks prior to class/post-class in order to enable their participation and promote active learning.

Contribution au profil d'enseignement

The English language courses at Bachelor level aim to enable the students to engage with English-language articles, and understand and take part in lectures and seminars delivered in English, whether at the ULB, during student exchange programmes, or in their future careers.

The course will be evaluated by means of a written exam (January) and an oral exam during the final two weeks of the 2nd semester or during the June exam period. Students will also undertake an assessed research project during which they will have to conduct a literature review and give an oral presentation on their research. The presentation will be done in groups during the 2nd semester and individually for the 2nd session in August.

For students who meet the minimum attendance requirement and who submit and subsequently corrected written work during the term:

Continuous Assessment:                                                     15%

For students who don’t meet the minimum attendance and/or do not submit and correct written work during the semester:

January Exam                                                                        35%

Continuous Assessment (2nd Semester):

  • Small-scale literature review:                                         10%
  • Oral Presentation:                                                          25%
Students must write and submit the literature review in order to present their research project.

Oral Exam in-class or during the exam session:              30%

Second Session (August)
