This is an English for Specific Academic Purposes course designed for social scientists.

The syllabus is divided into different units focusing on a range of topics to give student the skills they need to write academic English and carry out a research project.

These topics will be explored by means of discussions, presentations, written assignments, and reading and listening activities.

Vocabulary input is linked to the topics studied, and includes academic vocabulary aimed at improving expression in an academic context.

Objectifs (et/ou acquis d'apprentissages spécifiques)

To enable students to answer a research question that they, themselves, have formulated.

To enable students to summarize and integrate information from articles, both journalistic and academic, and from spoken discourse.

To enable students to understand extended spoken discourse of both academic and semi-academic nature, and to take notes on content.

To enable students to give presentations on a topic related to their studies.

To enable students to discuss certain issues related to human sciences.

Méthodes d'enseignement et activités d'apprentissages

The course will be delivered in two-hour sessions on campus. However, if necessary, it will be moved online.
Outside of these contact hours, students are expected to carry out certain tasks prior to class/post-class in order to enable their participation and promote active learning.

Contribution au profil d'enseignement

The English language courses at Bachelor level aim to enable to the students to engage with English-language articles, and understand and take part in lectures and seminars delivered in English, whether at the ULB, during student exchange programmes, or in their future careers.

The course will be evaluated by means of a written exam (January) and an oral exam (June). Students will also undertake an assessed research project during which they will have to present a mind map/poster, an annotated bibliography and give an oral presentation of their research. This will be done in groups during the 2nd semester and individually for the 2nd session in August.

Construction de la note (en ce compris, la pondération des notes partielles)

Written Exam (January): 30%
Oral Exam (June): 30%

Continuous Assessment:

  • Mind map/poster and mini-presentation: 5%
  • Annotated bibliography: 5%
  • Oral Presentation: 30%
Students must present their mind map/poster and submit the annotated bibliography in order to present their research project.
