Contenu du cours

The course is for complete beginners in digitisation and modelling in Anthropology. The course will look at how digitisation is prevalent in society and how 3D models can assist with understanding different aspects of human anatomy and fossil hominids. An introduction will be given to specific modelling techniques currently used in Biological Anthropology. This will include the creation of 3D models and the analysis of these models, including virtual sex determination, reconstruction of fossil hominids and locomotion. The course will also look at the ethical questions that digitisation raises. The final exam will consist of the student undertaking a small project and writing a report on the project (70%) aswell as giving an oral powerpoint presentation on the project (30%).

The course lectures will be given in English and access to a computer is a requirement for the course. It would be preferable if students can come with their own laptops, should they own one.

Objectifs (et/ou acquis d'apprentissages spécifiques)

  • Discover the history of digitisation and how this has changed our society.
  • Have an introduction into how fossils and human anatomy are digitised from different modelling programmes and be introduced to techniques such as laser scanning and photogrammetry.
  • Learn about how digitisation is used in biological anthropology today, including the reconstruction of different fossil hominids, sex determination and comparative analysis.
  • Begin to apply practical techniques of digitisation and modelling for biological anthropology.
  • Highlight the ethical questions that digitisation raises.
  • Compare techniques of virtual analysis vs non virtual analysis.

Pré-requis et Co-requis

Connaissances et compétences pré-requises ou co-requises

There is no pre-existing knowledge required as the course is for complete beginners in digitisation. The course complements the other courses in the module :

Paléoanthropologie and Eléments d'anatomie et d'embryologie humaine

Méthodes d'enseignement et activités d'apprentissages

The course will consist of lectures and practical sessions in different aspects of digitisation and modelling.
