Learn to

    • Apply strategic analysis frameworks to
      • Make sense of practical cases and real life situations
    • Assess and create through critical thinking
      • Assess the reasons leading to those choices
      • Create strategic recommendations of your own

More specifically, develop an understanding of the different elements of strategic management

– the comprehensive nature of one’s strategic position

– the ambiguous, non-routine nature of making strategic choices

– difficulties in making strategy work in practice

  • Recognize key strategic issues

  • Be able to apply them to practical cases

Méthodes d'enseignement et activités d'apprentissages

Strategy is a practical science. As such, every session will introduce theory, which will be immediately applied to short and larger cases.
Please be present in class and sit with your fellow group members, so  you can practise the cases and ask questions in group.

ASSESSMENT

In line with the learning objectives and pedagogical approach of this course, the assessment will consist of a group case work.
Students who are particularly diligent throughout the entire course, actively engaging with the material and cases, can be rewarded with one or two bonus points. Two bonus points will only be given to absolutely outstanding students, who put in an extra shift throughout all sessions of the course.

GROUP CASE WORK (upload to the uv site of the course by Friday 22 December, 2pm):

All students should form a group of 5 persons each. Please use the group registration link

provided on uv.ulb.ac.be to that effect.

All groups will receive the same case and assignment.

Please clearly note the number of your group as well as the names of all group members.

Plagiarism (including of other groups’ solutions) will result in a grade of 0 points for the

entire group.

GUIDE TO EXAM MARKS

16 plus - Work of distinguished quality which shows:

  • Evidence of further reading

  • Authoritative grasp of the concepts, methodology and content appropriate to the subject

  • Evidence of originality and insight

  • Ability to sustain an argument, think analytically and/or critically and to synthesise material

14-16 - Work of above expected quality which demonstrates:

  • Sound level of understanding of concepts, methodology and content

  • Draws on a material in class and beyond

  • Evidence of judgement in selecting, ordering and analysing content

  • Ability to synthesise material and to construct responses that offer insight

12-14 - Competent work of an acceptable level:

  • Derived from a solid basis of understanding

  • Demonstrates a grasp of relevant material and key concepts

  • Ability to structure and organise arguments, although performance may be rather routine

  • Accurate with no serious omissions, irrelevancies or mistakes

10-12 - Work that reproduces basic subject matter without adding anything and containing omissions, irrelevancies or mistakes

10 and below - Work that is incomplete, illogical with no structure
